There are comfortable hotels, tourist lodges and guest houses in Bhutan, approved by the department of tourism. No matter how simple, they can be quite charming in design, with handcrafted furnishings and decoration in traditional Bhutanese style.
Rooms are heated with electric heaters or by a wood stove called a bukhari. Keep in mind that Bhutan has only been accepting foreign visitors since 1974, and so the infrastructure is not yet well developed throughout the country. Generally speaking, as you travel east into central and eastern sections, the accommodations become simpler, but lodges in these parts still have modern plumbing and a warm and helpful staff.
